I am leaving sports media for an indefinite period of time.
July 30th will be my last show with Locked On Spartans and the newsletter is suspended. (I paused billing on the newsletter a while ago, btw).
I’ve been considering this move for a little while now. I’ve really enjoyed doing the podcast and the newsletter, but the combination of the two was taking my focus away from more important things too regularly. And cramming a bunch of work in from 9pm-midnight five days a week isn’t exactly sustainable with me taking care of a one-year-old many days each week.
I’m also just fucking sick and tired of having an opinion. I just want to watch Michigan State sports irrationally and emotionally without having to think about shaping content around it.
Don’t worry, I won’t be out of your lives forever. I’ll still be bopping around as my usually cruddy self on Twitter and I’m sure I’ll make the occasional podcast appearance.
Speaking of that, Matt is going to roll solo with the show for a while. Please give him a damn minute to get his feet under him and figure out the mechanics of driving the show.
Newsletter subscribers, I have the ability to give you partial refunds if you paid for a full year and feel like you didn't get your money's worth.. If you want to do that, email me at lockedonspartans@gmail.com and I’ll get that taken care of. Alternatively I am going to keep the newsletter alive and just have the billing paused so if you want to stick around until I start doing this again, you can do that too. You obviously won't be charged anything for that option and don't have to reach out to me or anything. I’ll also be refunding a few of the monthly subscribers for the last month they paid when I wrote like two posts. Please accept my genuine apologies for not fulfilling my end of that deal.
With my newly found free time I’ll probably be messing around with sports cards a bunch, because that’s pretty fun. I might buy some of that crypto currency everyone has been talking about. Maybe I’ll dabble in some stock market shenanigans. We’ll see. Mostly though I’ll just be hanging out with my family, being more present than I have been previously.
As I wrap this up I just want to thank everyone who has taken the time to listen, read or watch anything I’ve done the last few years. Growing the community around the content has been a genuine joy. Thanks for all the emails and compliments. My therapist says they really matter to me. (They do.)
A special thanks to Matt Hoppener, Stephen Brooks and Colton Pouncy for going the podcast in the early days when nobody knew who I was or what the show was. You guys gave me real legitimacy and helped push me to keep growing the show.
And lastly, thanks to Matt. I’m thrilled our internet thing grew into a legitimate friendship and I’m looking forward to seeing your beautiful face at the first tailgate this season when you’re hammered off fireball and I ask your wife how she puts up with you for the billionth time. You’re legitimately the best and you’re going to do great.
Sad to hear it Wil. You and I have spent many hours jogging around Saline. Best of luck in your other endeavors.
Glad you admitted “I just want to watch Michigan State sports irrationally and emotionally without having to think about shaping content around it.” I don’t how you alums can deal with the emotions and still be journalists. Deep down I think Comp is actually a State fan.
Cheers, Go Green!
time to bring this back.
